We follow these principles for safer space in all community activity at Arts Management Helsinki.

Principles of Safer Space

Arts Management Helsinki arranges discussions that aim to provide new perspectives, share knowledge, and offer possibilities of reflection. In order to make these events as fruitful as possible for all participants, we follow these principles of creating a safer space:

Inclusion

  • We do not make assumptions based on age, language, ethnicity, or other external qualities. We do not define another person’s identity for them.
  • We strive to actively check our assumptions, and acknowledge our privileges or positions of power.
  • Together, we create situations of mutual respect where all participants are included. If a shared discussion has a facilitator, this facilitator takes the responsibility of ensuring that everyone is heard.

Respect

  • Each participant has the right to articulate their own experiences and thoughts. We do not belittle the experiences of others, and we do not invalidate viewpoints that are different from our own. We aim for constructive dialogue and learning.
  • We do not mock or embarrass others. We can also discuss difficult topics.
  • We allow ourselves and others to be uncertain, imperfect, and fallible.
  • We treat sensitive topics with respect. If a participant wants to share confidential issues, we respect this confidentiality and do not share the information elsewhere.

Support

  • We accept mistakes and disagreements. We support one another, also in difficult times. We strive to learn from our mistakes.
  • We take action if we see inappropriate conduct.
  • If you need help or support, ask for it.
