Mark Niskanen

Multidisciplinary Artist, Jazz Pianist, Composer

Mark Niskanen (s. 1991) is a multidisciplinary artist, jazz pianist, and composer from Helsinki. Since 2008 Niskanen has lived in Michigan, New York, and Chicago, studying and working with jazz legends Barry Harris, Geri Allen, Robert Glasper, Kurt Elling, Fred Hersch, Taylor Eigst, Joe Lovano and Gretchen Parlato. Niskanen has also work as the pianist and composer for Chicago Children’s Choir, and performing his compositions in the USA, Europe and Asia with various orchestras. He was a Gilmore stipendiary in 2012 and 2014.

Niskanen has a Bachelor’s Degree in music and a Master’s Degree in Arts, received from Western Michigan University on a full scholarship. In his MA studies, Niskanen focused on audiovisual research, which led him to his current artistic practice combining visual arts and music. Niskanen currently lives in Helsinki and works at the intersection of sound, visual and performing arts in the duo Niskanen & Salo, and continues his active role as the artistic director of the 17 member orchestra Mark Niskanen Orchestral Experiment in the USA.
